True story...

...was watching Elvis Costello interviewing The Police the other night. Later in the show, they jammed "Watching The Detectives". Elvis was one of the acts on the "Stiff Tour" of 1977. Me and Chic saw the tour at the Apollo in Glasgow. This was the era when everyone created a "fanzine", photocopied it at work and sold it. (Local guy Lindsay Hutton was well known for his... "The Next Big Thing") Chic had a home made laminate for his, looked quite official. We went to the side stage door and asked if we could interview the bands. Unbelieveably, they said yes, and ushered us into the "dressing rooms" - what a tip! But we got to meet Nick Low, Ian Dury, Wreckless Eric and Elvis Costello. Elvis told us he was playing a new song live for the very first time tonight, called "Watching the Detectives". And me and Chic heard it first! True story!

Chic here: yup I remember that gig well - top night as the tickets were won in a raffle! My other memory was that Costello was a complete tosser. I asked him what he thought about the mixed nature of the crowd. He replied "I dont care if they are lions tigers and bears as long as they've paid to get in" without a hint of irony.
